The Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) condemned the incident, calling it reckless and a setback to efforts aimed at professionalizing the sector

A Land Rover was set ablaze by boda boda riders on Saturday night following a collision with a motorcycle along Thika Superhighway, near the National Youth Service (NYS) area.

The incident drew a large crowd and caused heavy traffic that lasted for hours.

Videos circulating online showed the vehicle engulfed in flames as the riders demanded that the driver be handed over to them. This comes just a week after a similar case on Jogoo Road, where boda boda operators torched a City Shuttle bus on August 7 after a crash left a rider dead.

In that incident, passengers had to flee as the bus was reduced to a burnt-out shell. Witnesses in both cases criticized emergency services for a slow response, which they said allowed the violence to escalate.

The Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) strongly condemned Saturday’s attack, calling it reckless and a setback to efforts aimed at professionalizing the sector.

“BAK strongly condemns the unfortunate incident on Thika Road where a vehicle was torched following a collision with a boda boda rider,” said National Executive Chairman Kevin Mubadi.

“While we sympathize with the rider involved, violence, destruction of property, and taking the law into one’s own hands are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Mubadi stated that those responsible must face the law. “All individuals involved in this act of lawlessness must be arrested and prosecuted to serve as an example. Such behaviour not only damages the image of our sector but also endangers the lives of innocent Kenyans.”

The association urged riders to avoid mob justice and allow police, medical, and insurance processes to take their course after accidents. “We do not advocate for chaos after an accident. Legal and safety procedures must always be followed. Justice must be sought through lawful channels,” BAK said.

Reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, BAK called on all boda boda riders to exercise restraint and respect the law. The statement also urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in handling the case.

The condemnation comes amid growing concern over repeated mob attacks by boda boda operators, which stakeholders say threaten road safety and continue to damage the sector’s reputation.
